National Service Scheme (NSS)
National Service Scheme (NSS) at Our College
Motto of NSS
The NSS motto, “Not Me But You,” reflects the essence of selfless service and collective responsibility. It emphasizes the importance of prioritizing the needs of others and working for the greater good, fostering a spirit of empathy and unity among volunteers.
History of NSS in India
The National Service Scheme (NSS) was launched on September 24, 1969, by the Government of India, coinciding with Mahatma Gandhi’s birth centenary, to channel the energy of youth into nation-building activities. Inspired by Gandhi’s ideals of selfless service, the NSS was established under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports to foster social consciousness and volunteerism among students. It began in 37 universities with 40,000 volunteers and has since expanded nationwide, engaging millions of students in community service. The NSS operates as a voluntary program, encouraging students to undertake social welfare activities while pursuing their education, with the aim of developing their personality through service to the community.
Our NSS Unit
The NSS unit at our college, affiliated with Veer Narmad South Gujarat University (VNSGU), Surat, is a vibrant hub of social service with a sanctioned strength of 300 volunteers. Under the able guidance of our NSS Program Officers—Dr. C. R. De, Prof. A. R. Joshi, and Prof. Smt. Ekta M. Desai—the unit has been actively contributing to community development since its inception. Our volunteers participate in a wide range of activities each year, embodying the spirit of service and social responsibility.
Activities Undertaken
Our NSS unit organizes numerous initiatives annually, focusing on community welfare, environmental sustainability, and personal development. Key activities include:
· Community Service: Blood donation camps, health check-up drives, and literacy campaigns in nearby villages to uplift underprivileged communities.
· Environmental Initiatives: Tree plantation drives, cleanliness campaigns under Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, and awareness programs on waste management and water conservation.
· Health and Awareness: Workshops on public health, yoga sessions, and campaigns addressing social issues like gender equality, drug abuse prevention, and road safety.
· Camps: Seven-day residential Special Camps in adopted villages, where volunteers engage in community projects like building sanitation facilities, organizing health camps, and conducting educational programs.
· Skill Development: Leadership workshops, disaster management training, and personality development sessions to equip volunteers with life skills.
Our volunteers consistently earn recognition at the university and state levels, reflecting their dedication and impact.
Usual NSS Activities
NSS activities nationwide are designed to promote social welfare and holistic development. Regular activities include health, education, and environmental awareness campaigns, along with community service projects like village clean-ups and infrastructure development. Special Camps, typically held annually, focus on immersive community engagement in rural areas. Volunteers also participate in national events like National Youth Day, Environment Day, and NSS Day celebrations. Training programs on leadership, first aid, and civic responsibilities are integral, ensuring volunteers grow as responsible citizens.
Our Commitment
The NSS unit at our college is dedicated to nurturing socially conscious, compassionate, and proactive youth who contribute meaningfully to society. Guided by the motto “Not Me But You,” our volunteers strive to create a positive impact through service, collaboration, and innovation. We invite students to join our NSS unit and embark on a rewarding journey of personal growth and community service. For more information, contact Dr. C. R. De, Prof. A. R. Joshi, or Prof. Smt.
